I got closer than this, but because the painting is behind the protective glass, to protect her from camera flash, and everyone crowds around it none of the pictures came out very well. Truth be told, I kind of like this one better.
Up close you can still see the beautiful details – if you can see through the flash flares. But it has lost a lot through years of poor care.
I think the Louvre is being unfair to the painting though. They put it in this room off to the side of the main hall with one of the largest paintings in the museum, The Feast of Canaan. So in contrast, even though it’s a normal-sized painting, it looks very small and… kind of disappointing.
