outside of the eiffel tower in the fog, this is my favorite pic. i love how the reflections in the water look like a mid-century illustrated postcard (the ones that make you say "how quaint ... that's so not the way things really look.")

Sharing your trip has been a thrill. I'd like to go back, too, sometime. Speaking of near religious experiences when you actually see some of these extraordianry things or places, we were in Istanbul for a few days last spring. Standing under the dome of the Hagia Sophia gave me goose bumbs Still does, when I think of it. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever see it. So, have a safe trip home and keep dreaming the impossible dreams, because you never know ....

Ahhhhhhhh. to see this in France is priceless. I have seen Monet's at the national Gallery in Washington .... as I am sure you have. I even bought a book ... it was not until I got home that I realized the book was in French! Luckily our N'l Gallery agreed to an exchange via mail! Inside the book Monet is quoted on his advice to an American painter: "Try to forget what object you have before you--a tree, a house, a field, or whatever. Merely think, here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow ....

when i went to versailles w/ the family - we brought breads, pasteries, and fruit - and had a picnic on the grounds - it was still chilly in march/april - and then played tag around the flowers/statues etc. still one of my favorite memories.

I think it is a rule that the cafe's attached to a remarkable sight be bad. Our experience is that by the time we get to that cafe we are starving and will eat about anything that is served fast. Vicious circle. Glad your take on Versailles was the same as mine. I was there in June of 1967 or 68, and I remember two things: 1, the grounds were beautiful, and 2, the kindest thing I could say about the decor inside was it did give me more understanding of that period of history. You're right, no wonder they revolted. Imagine what the upkeep costs even today! The French are still bleeding into Versailles.
